God’s covenant with David. (4-17): (Parallel 1 Chronicles 17: 4-15)

Reference to the past (4-7)

V. 6 I have not dwelt in a house… God did not give any instruction about a building, but tent. Tabernacle at Shiloh had a door and was called a “house” or “Temple.” Eventhough there are suggestions that there were some kind of structure outside the Tabernacle, that was for people’s convenience only, and God was not particular about it.

V. 7 To shepherd my people Israel God is reminding that As a leader, his primary responsibility was to shepherding God’s people. You may not fulfill your desire to do something for God until you die. That is alright. But you must fulfill your primary call of God. Temple was in the mind of God, but it is not given to David, but to Solomon. Thus the initiative lies with God.

Reference to David’s past and the purpose of his call (8-10) David was to be warrior and shepherd. God has established a great name for David through his acts (V.9). There is another reason related to this in 1 Chro. 22:8 and 1 Kings 5:3. His disqualification by God from building the Temple caused mainly by the nature of his tenure, which was a time of warfare and subduing enemies.
The son of David (Solomon) and the SON of David (Jesus Christ) merge here.

Covenant with David (11-17)

V. 12 I will establish his kingdom… Primarily, this refers to Solomon.

V. 13 I will establish his the throne of his kingdom forever… Though it is like repetition of v. 12, this term “FOREVER” signifies the never ending Kingdom of Christ Jesus.

V. 14 I will his Father, and he shall be My son. … Hebrew 1:5 ascribe this verse to Jesus Christ. The reason is that those who were physically descendants of David failed to retain the kingdom, whereas, Jesus as the Son of David established the kingdom forever.

V. 16 your kingdom shall be established forever… your throne shall be established forever… This verse certainly can’t mean a physical house only, but reaches forward to Jesus Christ’s statement in John 2:19. I Chronicles 17: 12 & 14 boldly mention the establishment of David’s kingdom forever when there was no kingdom in Israel for more than 70 years. This may be a reference to the Messiah’s kingdom.

David’s response, prayer and thanksgiving. (18-29)David’s prayer is full of the breathings of devout affection toward God. He had low thoughts of his own merits. All we have, must be looked upon as Divine gifts. He speaks very highly and honourably of the Lord’s favours to him. Considering what the character and condition of man is, we may be amazed that God should deal with him as he does. – Mathew Henry Concise Commentary

V. 18 Sat. … David sat before the LORD means remained or spent lengthy time before the LORD. Who am I, O Lord GOD?…that You have brought me this far? In spite of great military victories, and acclamation by the whole nation, David humbles himself to call unworthy of all God’s blessing. O Lord GOD?… occurs 8 times which shows David’s intimacy with God.

V. 19 A great while to come… David understood the very long timeframe God is talking about when God said FORVER. manner of man (2 Samuel 7:19)… have regarded me according to the rank of a man of high degree (1 Chro. 17:17)… Talking about several generation of kingdom which is going to be forever shows the regard for the person.

V. 21 Your Word’s sake and according to your own heart…The two motivation for God’s blessings are God’s faithfulness to HIS Word and the loving generosity of His heart. Vs. 25 & 26 As you have said (25)… Let Your Name be glorified(26)…Let the house of Your servant (26)… This is accepting the blessings and promises of God in faith.

Vs. 26 & 27 Lord of Hosts… Lord of Sabaoth. Sabaoth means army of Angels in heaven. This emphasizes the power of God. This power of God will vanquish all enemies and fulfill the promises to David and his seed.
Vs. 27 – 29 Again these verses Embrace the promises that God has given. Let us embrace the promises that God has given us. Let us expect them to come to pass because He is faithful.
